Pittsburgh, PA June 2, 2013- Exploring the homoerotic subtext of the superhero culture at the Pittsburgh GLCC.

The GLCC is showcasing the artwork of local and international artists in the comic book genre. If you grew up with comics and graphic novels, you may have noticed: The incredible bodies in flamboyant and skin-tight outfits. The leading of double lives. The intense male/ male relationships. The strange, unusual and even “unnatural” powers. Maybe it was the lack of positive gay role models in the mainstream culture or maybe all superheroes ARE kinda gay.
Things have progressed a bit from Northstar to Batwoman to a gay wedding in Archie. This show is meant to explore and celebrate all the hints, the winks & nods and the glorious camp that occurred over time.
Show opens Sunday, June 2nd 6-9pm. Free admission, Free drinks & snacks, Free parking downtown. Wear a cape.

Exhibition runs from: Sunday June 2nd to Sept. 25th.

Pittsburgh Gay & Lesbian Community Center provides the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) individuals, their families and supporters in Western Pennsylvania with resources and opportunities to promote visibility, understanding and equality within the LGBT communities and the community-at-large. The GLCC will work toward these goals through education, social support, networking and advocacy.

One of those theoretical questions that come up in art school is something like:  "Are you willing to go to jail for your art?" or "Are you willing to be arrested in the name of art?" "How many rules are you willing to break?"
I may find out very soon. But not in any glorious,  aesthetic way.
I've arranged my life in such a way so that Art is the priority. In doing so, other things have had to go on the back burner. Some things have gone neglected, causing a bit of an unbalance. And it may have caught up with me.
Is this really worth it?

I mean... .there's always the chance that I have no real talent and i've wasted my life.
ha.

This Saturday, Artfrom gallery is holding an art benefit show called Motherly Love.
"An event celebrating creation and life!
Proceeds from the art directly benefit families affected by breast cancer. Come and support this cause and the art scene by entering work, attending the event, or purchasing a piece of art for a great cause. Refreshments will be served."
I am offering a portrait drawing in the auction.

Further on down the line:
June 1st my show opens at Remedy.
It's a bit of a nostalgia show for me, going back to my comic book roots.

June 2nd will be the closing of Curved Light.
This coincides with the Vandergrift Fine Arts Festival, so come out and make a day of it.

And Sunday June 3rd is the Common Wealth Show, downtown at the Gay & Lesbian Community Center.
that's a lot of art in a short period of time... and you may be thinking if I am over extending my self?
maybe.... we'll see how this goes.

Pittsburgh, PA Oct. 2, 2010- The artwork of Sam Thorp showcased at Pittsburgh GLCC.

The GLCC is showcasing the artwork of local artist, Sam Thorp in the new downtown space. This new exhibition will feature paintings, drawing, and prints of wonderful arabesque line work in bright high-key colors. Thorp’s work is inspired by the incredible diversity of the community, each subject searching out and finding one’s one unique gift. This would include the conventional blending in to typical stereotypes to outlandish individuality; with variations of nationality, gender expression and body types.

Exhibition runs from: Friday October 2nd to October 31.
Gallery Opening: Friday October 2nd 5pm- to 9pm
