<style type="text/css">

<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
I have worked as a custom framer/
archivist for several years and here are a few notes to keep in mind
for frames.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Decide where you want to hang this
piece. </b><br />It helps to visualize where this piece will end up
when deciding on how to frame it. <br />Framing not only offers
protection for the artwork but provides a visual transition between
the work and the room it is in. <br /><br /><b>Frames: </b><br />Is the
space more rustic/ country/ coastal? <br />You will probably want to go
with a frame of weathered or distressed wood. <br /><br />Is the space
more modern/ contemporary/ cosmopolitan? <br />Then consider frames
with sharp corners and straight lines. Metal frames work well in this
environment.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Is the space more Victorian/ regency/
traditional? <br />Then the classical fancy gilded museum frames may be
a good choice.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Matting: </b><br />Drawings or any
works on paper usually have a matt board border. This first and
foremost protects the artwork. You usually do not want the glass of
the frame to rest directly onto your artwork. The color and texture
of the matt helps provide a transition from artwork to wall. It can
also help to emphasize or bring out certain aspects of the artwork.
<br />A general rule of thumb is the color of the matt is determined by
the 3rd most dominant color in the work. If any one color
seems overwhelming or under whelming you can stack 2 or 3 matts of
analogous colors. Stacking mats in this way does make the art seem
for grand and offers more protection for the art.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Glass: </b><br />Try to use a glass
with a UV coating to prevent light damage. Non- glare glass is always
nicer (but often more expensive). For very large pieces, consider
Acrylic plexiglass. It is lighter than regular glass and far less
breakable.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<b>Visual Rhythm: </b><br />A little
trick that makes the artwork always pleasing to look at is setting up
a visual rhythm from artwork to walls. If your walls are a dark color
use a light colored frame, then a dark, light, dark matt to the
artwork. <br />Light colored walls? Use a dark frame, then light matts,
alternating light then dark until you get to the artwork. <br />Using
all dark colors or all light colors often seems overwhelming and can
fatigue the eye.
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<style type="text/css">
<!--
@page { margin: 0.79in }
P { margin-bottom: 0.08in }
-->
</style>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
A certified custom framer should be
able to help you make these decisions and create a piece using all
high quality archival (acid free) materials. Custom framing can be a
bit of a a monetary investment. Large chain stores like Michaels/
Aaron brothers offer sales & coupons, but also great deals can be
had at small local business framers as well. <br /><br />Enjoy your
artwork. </div>

I'm pretty sure this is what I said when I first met Donnie Toomer. That turned out to be a dumb thing to say cause he was born in Georgia. He moved to Pittsburgh to live with his dads. Those dads are rather prominent members to the gay community, owning a few clubs and shops around town. But more importantly, those dads are really nice guys. Donnie grew up running a spotlight for drag shows and had a few great stories about Queen drama. Donnie worked in a law firm by day, hustled his art at night. He had a very distinct style and vision that he worked very hard to develop. I had Donnie do a show at the gay community center during that short time I ran the gallery there. I feel fortunate to own a few of his pieces. Donnie could be very sensitive and emotional, which was difficult for him in a world that does not always appreciate that sort of thing. I remember a few conversations with him getting all worked up and passionate over this and that. And a few times having to talk him down when he got a little too carried away. When he had his show at that tattoo shop I had to show up to officiate a fight between him and that gallery owner. Turns out Donnie has/had a large extended family. Lots of half- siblings and step- siblings in Georgia and Pennsylvania as well as the local art and gay community. Last few years Donnie worked a lot with Art- All- NIght. Apparently, he was very passionate about that yearly event. The last time I saw Donnie was at the MWFA gallery last winter. He had a show upstairs and my show was downstairs. Pretty sure I gave him a hug the last time I saw him. I’m glad I did.<br /><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.008);">There’s not going to be a funeral service, which is why I’m posting this here.<br />Donations can be made to artallnight.org in his honor. </span></div>

<br />
Each year, QCC organizes a large-scale month-long exhibition of cutting-edge queer art at SomArts Cultural Center Gallery in San Francisco that serves as the National Queer Arts Festival’s kick-off event. This annual exhibition is the largest and oldest forum for queer visual art in the U.S. For the past 17 years, the exhibition has featured 30 to 60 emerging and mid-career Queer artists’ work. These works are documented on QCC website, which provides a visual history of queer art making in the U.S. and provides curators and activists with a valuable resource for contemporary queer visual culture.
<br />
<br />
The exhibition will explore the idea of physical, social, political, affective and historical connections. For those who have been denied acceptance into existing social models and access to traditional political means, or for those who voluntarily reject these structures, queers have created alternative social connections as sites of political transformation or contestation.
<br />
<br />
Historically, LGBTQ people have made connections with each other across racial, geographic, gender, ability, age, class and cultural borders. These connections have built a strong LGBT community, generated new concepts of queer families, developed innovative health and social service models and made long lasting alliances with other disenfranchised communities and social change movements – interweaving social justice issues into our daily lives.<br />
<br />
For the past 40 years LGBT people have constantly forged new ways to connect within and outside of our perceived communities: body-building magazines, lesbian pulp fiction, want ads in straight publications and other 1960s practices gave way to gay newspapers, bars, sex clubs, churches and political organizations in the 1970s. In the 1990s the increasing use of digital technology proliferated the ways LGBT people could communicate and connect. With this rise of technology, we are called upon to respond to a new and increasingly rapid proliferation of political and visual culture and an array of urgent social issues that this technology makes increasingly visible.

Traveled with the Most Wanted Fine Art crew up to Queens NYC for the Maker Faire event.<br />By supplying the Life Size Mouse Trap event with an Art Car to smash, we got to paint live in front of the public.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I painted live almost all day Saturday and most of Sunday before it began to rain. Got a lot of attention, and a sale.<br />It was interesting. We weren't the only PGH crew up there.<br />I was impressed by many of the other exhibits especially the 3D printing.<br />

<tr><td style="font-size: 10pt;"><i>My name is Danielle Sload and I am a casting assistant for Ink Master, Spike TV's exciting tattoo reality competition series! We are currently casting for season 4 and would like to inform you and your staff that we will be holding an open casting call in Las Vegas!<br /><br />Essentially, we are in search of those who have artistic and creative tattoo skills with an outgoing, dynamic personality! In this exciting series, highly skilled tattoo artists from around the country will compete in a high stakes competition for the chance to win a $100,000 cash prize and the coveted title of Ink Master.<br /><br />I have attached a copy of our flyer that further details what we are looking for. Please feel free to post this on your website, send out to any list serve you may have or forward it on to anyone you think may be interested. Any help in spreading the word about our search would be greatly appreciated!"</i></td></tr>
<tr><td style="font-size: 10pt;"> </td></tr>
<tr><td style="font-size: 10pt;"><b>Dear Danielle,<br /><br />As much as I and my "staff" appreciate the touching form letter you sent, and as much as we are honored to be one of the 10,000 shops chosen to receive an invite to your casting call, we're going to have to turn it down.<br /><br />Though we surely do have artistic and creative tattoo skills, and also dynamic outgoing personalities, we would never, ever, ever in a million years whore out those skills for your bullshit TV series. Tattooing is an ancient sacred art and it would be an unforgivable sin to use it to sell Axe body spray or subscriptions to Maxim or whatever the fuck else keeps Spike TV on the air.<br /><br />Here's another thing: I already *have* the title of "Ink Master", at least as far as you and your dinky network are concerned. I started tattooing in 1994, almost ten years before you were even on the air. You're no more qualified to crown me "Ink Master" than a small child is qualified to decide who's president. So even if I won your rigged little personality contest, the title would be an embarrassment, not a boost. The kind of embarrassment that $100,000 would do little to assuage.<br /><br />So yeah, I'll spread the word about your search, but you're not going to like it. I'm sure you'll find a roster of desperate tattooers willing to sell out their craft for a chance at stardom, but you won't find it here.<br /><br />We *hate* television, and everything associated with it. In fact the rejection of television and the sick, empty, divisive cult of personality it embodies is the main reason we've had the time and space to become quality artists.<br /><br />We have dynamic personalities precisely because we spend 0% of our lives in slack-jawed passive consumption of shows like this. We are creative and artistic *despite* you, not because of you.<br /><br />Here's hoping that your show fails, your network goes off the air, and tattooing is finally free of the corrupting influence shows like this have brought.<br /><br />And in the future, unless you have a show called "America's Hardest Crappings", you'd do well to take me off your god damned mailing list.<br /><br />Kiss my ass forever,<br /><br />Bruce</b></td></tr>
