11 Facts about Arts in Education

source: http://www.dosomething.org/tipsandtools/11-facts-about-arts-education
  1. Students who participate in arts programs are at least three times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, elected to class office within their schools, participate in a math and science fair, win an award for school attendance and win an award for writing an essay or poem.
  2. Third grade art students who participated in the Guggenheim Learning Through Art Program performed better in six categories of literacy and critical thinking skills - including thorough description, hypothesizing and reasoning - than did students who were not in the program.
  3. Studies show that students of the arts in all disciplines outperformed their non-arts peers on the SAT by 91 points in 2009.
  4. Numerous studies affirm that students who receive music education in school improve their SAT and ACT scores in math, foreign language and creative writing.
  5. In a 2009 report done by New York City, only 33% of students take music classes. Out of 160 middle schools in Brooklyn, 26% of schools don’t even offer music education.
  6. Nine out of ten parents surveyed opposed cuts to the arts in our schools, yet many policy makers seem tone-deaf to this critical part of educating our children.
  7. Employment in arts-related jobs are set to rise 16% through 2016, which is faster than the national average in most fields.
  8. In a report released by the National Endowment of the Arts in 2008, the amount of people who attended at least one arts event was 34.6%, down about 5% from six years prior.
  9. Nationally, the nonprofit arts and culture industry generates $166.2 billion in economic activity every year.
  10. The not-for-profit arts and culture industry generates 5.7 million jobs every year.
  11. About 86% of artists vote in comparison with about 60% of all Americans.

Sketchbook Tour comes to Pittsburgh

A while back I participated in the Sketchbook Project from the Art House Co-op.
Finally, the sketchbook tour is coming to Pittsburgh.

I'm not sure if mine will be in the mix; but its a chance to see a sample from this huge world- wide project.
One night only. At Assemble, which is located at 5125 Penn Ave.
Friday November 2nd, 6-10pm during Unblurred. One night only, so don't miss out.

Peacock Venus repro- print Available

I don't usually do prints, but this is a special case: You can get the collaborative piece done with Lauren Toohey.
The original was done during a live painting event, is over 10 feet tall, and was donated to raise money for a local arts venue.
Get yourself a print. Pick the size and finish you want. Have it framed and delivered right to your door. Just in time for the holidays!

Art / Top Surgery Fundraiser

Friday @ Cattivo Sotto Lounge.

I'll be donating art. Proceeds will support gender-confirming top surgery for a trans/queer friend.
The Top It Off show at Cattivo Sotto Bar is a night of live art, gallery art, and drag. Art will be on sale throughout the night.… In fact…. if you buy any of my art at Cattivo during the fundraiser, I’ll throw in a free custom portrait…  and i’m good at those.

Show Details can be found here:

If you can't make it to the show consider donating directly. Any amount will help.

3 Day Weekend of Art.

Busy, busy, busy.

Friday Oct 5th. during Unblurred.
I will have a new piece in the Rustbelt Rivalry show.

This is part two of the art & culture exchange Most Wanted Fine Art has with the guys in Cleveland. Back in July I traveled with the Most wanted crew to the Waterloo Arts Festival and competed with Cleveland artists for fame & glory. Now they come here. More info can be found at the website.

What will I be showing?

Saturday I will be back at Most Wanted Fine Art to paint live for the first ever Car Art show in Pittsburgh.
I'll be teaming up with Eric Luden to paint Rockstar Jeff's van. It's competitive with prizes, and I think we have a good chance of winning.
More info about the show can be found here: http://www.most-wantedfineart.com/carart.php

Then last, but not least, Sunday.
I put together a show for the GLCC. International emerging artists (who all showed at Most Wanted, btw...)  will be gracing the walls of the Community Center. Leah Bevilacqua was originally scheduled to take part in this show, but she fell ill and had to withdraw. Let's all hope she gets better and back on her feet soon.  The opening is 6-9pm. Just after the football game.  Street parking is free. Food and drink will be served. So come down and check this out.
