Notes on figure drawing:

High focus drawing by James McMullen

Take proportions of the figure and reassemble to express some notion of modern life.

To make figure drawing pertinent to modern day psychology it has to be manipulated in some way.

The figure is more than a mechanical problem, to be solved. Understand the possibilities. Your eyes are only the 1st threshold. Use intellectual and emotion skills in art.

Change the model into a design. Engage in a sense of celebrating the subject by drawing as sense of here & now.

Understand the model w/ creative synthesis. Learn about the model.

The paradox of self- expression is to express ourselves more powerfully when we stop thinking about expressing ourselves and concentrate on the problem.
We are revealed in our work by our choices.

Devote yourself to models reality. What is it about the human figure that makes it so unique?

Merge your analytical thinking w/ intuitive. Be responsive. In a state of high focus, we accept the risk.

Drawing leads to the edge of what is understood. Get rid of the space between head and hand.

Feel & draw as much as you can. Start drawing where it is important to you. Nailing down the specific mood & form of the model is like time travel.

Style is often a substitute for real ability. Drawing is meditation.

See the roundness of figure & space it occupies. Roundness is life presence. Suggest forms as the turn in space.
Stylized simplicity is reward of studying 1,000’s of poses.
Animus- intention or purpose.

The quality of the figure is its rhythm. The parts cooperate beautifully is the key to unity.
