Notes on why we need the arts

Improves the quality of life
Food and shelter gives us life. Art gives us something to live for.

Art education is not frills, it is basic. Bringing values back to teaching, art may be the best way.

“art establishes the basic human truths which must serves as the touch stones of our judgment”~ John Kennedy

Art teaches children in ways math and science cannot. If we want our children to be truly civilized we must answer the hunger within.

Literate in the arts is to receive signals and symbols with understanding but also send.

1. achieve excellence must concentrate on early years of education. The best lessons are learned early.
2. Curriculum, goes beyond isolates facts to gain a larger perspective on the world.
3. Less concern for curriculum and more concern for inspiration. More creativity and less conformity
4. Find more effective ways to evaluate students. There’s more than verbal intelligence
5. We must serve all students

The arts are essential, the arts are not something to be thrown a bone after everything else is taken care of because everything else will never be taken care of.

Art adds dimension to life that cannot be satisfied in any other way.

Arts improve quality of life for all in community
-investment in our society
-enhance companies image
- spur economic development
help businesses sell more products

well developed art programs help students better articulate perceptions
learn importance of fashioning their own image of the world around them
better experience and understand other societies

learning technique becomes so obsolete quickly the demand of experimentation and creativity never runs out.

Notes from Bruce Lee’s view on Art

An artist’s expression is his soul made apparent, his schooling, as well as his “cool” being exhibited. Eliminate “not clear” thinking and function from your root.

We can see through others, only when we see through ourselves.

When I have listen to my mistakes, I have grown.
Require not just a moment of perception, but a continuous awareness, a continuous stage of inquiry in which there is no conclusion.

Action is our relationship to everything.

Art is never decoration or embellishment. Instead, it is a constant process of maturing. Art, after all, is a means of acquiring “personal” liberty. Your way is not my way, nor mine yours.

Art lives where absolute freedom is.

The truth is outside all fixed patterns.

A man is literally what he thinks.

It is not the obstacle- but your reaction to it.

Thoughts are things.

Stand not upon the order of going, but go at once.

The really great Zen artist states the utmost in the minimum lines or effort. The closer to the source the less waste there is.

One will never get anymore than he thinks he can get.

Art is communication for the feelings. Art must originate with an experience or feeling of the artist.

At also means daily hermit like training to upgrade or maintain one’s quality.

Notes

When you are confident in yourself the need to hurt, humiliate, or kill another is absent.

Eternity is happening now.

A world in a grain of sand
And heaven in a wild flower
Hold infinity in the pal m of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.
~William Blake

Lessons of Merlin

In each of us there is another whom we do not know. They speak to us in dreams and tells us how differently things see us from the way we see ourselves~ G.C. Jung

Even as it is useless to think about infinity, so it is useless to worship the number of gods- least of all is it any use to worship the First God, the effective fullness and the highest good. Through our prayer we cannot take anything away from it because the effective emptiness swallows everything. ~ G.C. Jung

If you seek to understand the whole universe, you will understand nothing at all- but seek to understand yourself, and you will come to understand the whole universe.

Thus my patter of relationship to the world was already prefigured; as a child I felt myself to be alone, and today I am still solitary, because I know things and must hi8nt at things which other people do not know- and usually do not even want to know.~ G.C. Jung

Nature is the great teacher, and the best of mortal instructors but inept guides by comparison

When the student is ready, the teacher shall appear.

Soar beyond illusion!
The unwary soul who fails to grapple with the mocking Demon of Illusion, will return to the Earth as the Slave of Illusion.

To become a true master of fate
You must first became a “knower of self”,
When your can repose in comfort between the wings of your Dragon,
Which is no born nor dies throughout ages eternal,
Then will shadows forever vanish
Leaving that which within you knows… for it is
Knowledge not of fleeting lifetimes of illusion,
but of a real man that was, that is
And that will be again—
For whom the hour shall never strike.

It comes from thee for there is no book no appointed expert to read the scriptures on the wind. We have to seek them out in their old territory. To know them is an individual quest for there is no dwelling; they are too great to be contained. They are sunlight and moonshine that shines from the newly kindled fire within each one who walks in their ways. Their worship is joy and rejoicing, and rituals and freedom of the spirit, dancing in harmony with nature, life-long to a peaceful end. This is not an easy path to follow, those who set out upon the hidden ways need to desire that secret knowledge, long for it in their hearts, yearn for it in their souls, and be willing, in turn, to offer continuing personal dedication, commitment to love. Don’t scorn book learning, but don’t believe that it holds all the wisdom you need either. Do your best, and the gods will bless you. Nothing is gained for nothing.

Fear is a poor excuse for not doing the work, We are all afraid. It is nothing new. If you are alive, you are afraid.

All you are seeking is seeking you. If you be still it will find you. It has been waiting for you a long time. Once it is here, don’t move away. Rest. See what happens next.

Those who cannot howl will never find their pack.

Be wild; that is how to clear the river. In its original form, the river does not flow in pollution. We dirty it up. The river does not dry up, we block it. If we want to allow it its freedom we have to allow creative loves to be let loose, to stream in, initially censoring nothing.
