Enso

Circle. The Japanese word for circle.
By painting a circle you can express your mind and reveal your character.

It's a type of meditation, a type of exercise.

The moment where you clear your mind and move your hand.

One stroke. No fixing, No modification, No correction.
Understand there is an overlap between the philosophy of calligraphy and swordsmanship here.

Your character is revealed in your movements. This is true in all drawing. Enso gets right to the core.

Anyone can try this. But the real masters are those who are mentally and spiritually complete.

The circle is the most universal and primal form. The circle is spiritual, illustrating wholeness, truth and perfection. It has no beginning or end.

At the same time the truth and the beauty is in the imperfections. (Fukinsei philosophy or wabi sabi)

Recent visit to the Warhol

If you haven't seen the summer show at the Warhol Museum, you really should.
The top floor has the work of Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and there is A LOT of it.
Mostly self - referential... but that is to be expected. Some of it dates back to 1960.
A life time of making yourself .. your life... into art.
According to the website, "The cultural engineer Genesis BREYER P-ORRIDGE is an avant-garde anti-hero whose remarkable body of underground work reminds us that when you believe something, artistic integrity demands that you live by it too."
I also wanted to see Caldwell's show at the Warhol.
The photos are packed salon style I actually found my self in the background of a photo and one of my paintings in another photo... which was a rather nice feeling. It's nice to see the queer underground of Pittsburgh getting some appreciation.

Busy, busy, busy.

Sept. 5, 6, 7th. I'll have new artwork in Detroit. Tangent Gallery. A tribute to Stanley Kubrick.

Friday Sept. 6th. Gestures @ MWFA. I'm showing new work and curating some artists you should know about.

Saturday Sept. 7th. The PussyCat Riot @ Cattivo. Find and buy my feline inspired art.

Saturday, Sept. 13th. The Souls of Art Folk at the August Wilson Center. I've curated some exciting new & local talent. And will be displaying politically and culturally charged artwork of my own.

Sunday, Sept. 22nd. The 3rd Annual Pittsburgh Zine Fair. I'm teaming up with Anna Bender for some new material.

Saturday, Sept. 28th. Vehicular Abstraction. Car Art. I won the title last year... what will happen this time?

Also... There may possibly be an article about me in the September issue of Equal Magazine and The Penn Bulletin. I don't want to say too much and jinx it... but pick up an issue and look.

Sept. Unblurred

GESTURES SPEAK LOUDLY AT MOST WANTED FINE ART

Pittsburgh, PA Sept. 6, 2012- The Art of NonVerbal Communication in the Heart of the Pittsburgh Art Scene.

Nine fine artists communicate in parallel at Most Wanted Fine Art the first Friday in September during Unblurred. Gestures: the Fine Art of Non- Verbal Communication has been curated by Sam Thorp and will feature top local artists: Kyle Anthony Adams, Ren Burke, Mark Dobosh, Masha Fikhman Mia Donna Maneer, Anne Michelle Lyons & Katie Lynn Moran. Each artists will have expressive displays communicating a variety of thoughts and feelings.

Wine tasting by Wilhelm Winery and music by Grand Snafu will fill out the evening.

Exhibition runs from: Friday September 6th to September 29th, 2011.

Opening Reception: Friday 6^th of September 6pm- to 11pm

The Artists:

Kyle Anthony Adams (Originally from Woodstock NY, now residing in Pittsburgh) well rounded Multi-Disciplinary Visual Artist. Kyle works in Paint, Web/ Graphic Design, Photography and Video performance artist. He owns and operates his own screen print shop and raises a pot bellied pig. His sun sign is Virgo. Ren Burke (Originally from Pittsburgh, now resides in Fort Collins Colorado) An earlier academic interest in zoology and the natural world translated into Ren's current aesthetic language. She tends to paint with vibrant, fauvist color, but her intention is to remain true to the spirit of the subject. For the most part, Ren's animal subjects are portrayed in a whimsical manner, but without demeaning them. Mark Dobosh (Pittsburgh) A.K.A. 3D Mark, of the Coat Hanger Club, makes jewelry, clothing, and abstract art from recycled materials. He finds it sad that so much useful stuff is just thrown away so he tries to repurpose what he can. Just because something is broken doesn't it's trash.

Masha Fikhman (Russian-born, Pittsburgh-based) experiments with mixed media and celestially laden imagery to explore the relationship between self and universal identity. Her most recent paintings are largely based on the human figure juxtaposed with elements of nature, animals, and the cosmos to suggest the interconnectivity of all living things and an attempt to think beyond the selfish tendencies of the ego. Mia Donna Maneer (Pittsburgh) searches for creative images in the dark, forbidden corners of culture. More work can be seen at: http://miaphoto.net/

Anne Michelle Lyons (Pittsburgh) has an eye for capturing subtle details that often go unnoticed. Her artistic techniques have evolved quickly and her prints transcend pretty subjects to become a picture within a picture.

Katie Lynn Moran (Pittsburgh) Katie Moran is a fantasy and nature based artist. Her paintings are bold, dark, organic, mythical and natural. She has shown her work in various galleries in Pittsburgh and studied at the University of Pittsburgh.

Sam Thorp (Pittsburgh) has many art shows here as well as around the world. The work is mainly figurative with a strength in color and portraiture. Sam is also responsible for curating the show. More work can be seen at: http://www.graphicanatomy.com

The filmmaker, Nancy Evelyn Gold will also be celebrating her 20^th anniversary of the day she started living as herself.
